Lake McConaughy, near Ogallala and Martin, has white sand beaches that look like they belong on a coast, and you can camp right on them. Big Mac, as locals call it, is the largest reservoir in the state, and on a summer night the beach is lined with campfires.

Out west, Lake Minatare near Scottsbluff has a lighthouse, an odd sight on the plains, and Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock, landmarks on the Oregon Trail, are close by. Harlan County Lake near Republican City has Corps campgrounds in the south, and Pawnee Lake near Malcolm is an easy stop outside Lincoln.
