Camping by state
41 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
In Custer State Park, a herd of about 1,300 bison roams free, and on the Wildlife Loop you'll wait while they cross the road. The burros there will walk up to your window looking for snacks. The campgrounds at Legion Lake, Stockade Lake and Center Lake sit in the pines inside the park.
The Needles Highway runs through narrow tunnels and past granite spires near Custer, and Keystone is the town below Mount Rushmore. Around Hill City and Lead, Black Hills National Forest campgrounds sit by small lakes like Roubaix. The Sturgis rally fills every campground in the hills in early August, so plan around it.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
329 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
