Camping in Kansas

18 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.

On the Cimarron National Grassland near Richfield, in the far southwest corner, you can still see the ruts left by wagons on the Santa Fe Trail, the longest stretch of the trail on public land. The grassland has a small campground, and the sky out there is enormous.

Most of the Kansas list is Corps of Engineers lakes. Perry Lake near Ozawkie and Perry, Tuttle Creek near Keats outside Manhattan, and Kanopolis Lake near Marquette all have campgrounds on the water. Near Kanopolis, Mushroom Rock State Park has sandstone formations that really do look like mushrooms.

Check locally

A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
