Under the hills around Brownsville runs Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world, and you can camp right on top of it. Maple Springs is the drive-in campground, and the backcountry sites like Sal Hollow and Raymer Hollow are a hike into the woods above the caves.
In the east, Red River Gorge near Campton is full of sandstone arches, and the climbers who come for its cliffs end the day with pizza in town. Cave Run Lake near Farmers has Forest Service campgrounds at Zilpo and Twin Knobs. Down south near Corbin, Cumberland Falls is one of the few places you can see a moonbow on a clear night with a full moon. Land Between the Lakes near Cadiz covers the west.
