Camping by state
116 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
Southern Illinois is the surprise. Cave-In-Rock, on the Ohio River, is a cave in the bluff that river pirates once used as a hideout, and the state park above it has camping. A short drive north, Camp Cadiz sits in the Shawnee National Forest near Garden of the Gods, where sandstone formations look out over miles of forest.
Further north, Carlyle Lake is the biggest man-made lake in the state, with Corps campgrounds along the dam, and Lake Shelbyville has more around Lithia Springs and Lone Point. Up near the Wisconsin line, the Chain O'Lakes campgrounds near Fox Lake are good for paddling. Kinkaid Lake near Harrison is a quiet spot in the south.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
2,107 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
