Camping by state
79 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
Spruce Knob, near Whitmer, is the highest point in West Virginia, and on a clear night the sky up there is about as dark as it gets in the East. Spruce Knob Lake has a campground in the spruce, and Seneca Rocks, the sharp sandstone fin climbers come for, is just down the road.
Summersville Lake is the other standout, with water clear enough that people scuba dive in it and cliffs along the shore. Canaan Valley near Harman sits high and cool, and the Cranberry River near Richwood runs through the Monongahela National Forest. Burnsville and Flatwoods have Corps campgrounds in the middle of the state, handy off I-79.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
437 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
