Camping by state
214 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
Stanley is a tiny town with the Sawtooth Mountains standing right behind it, sharp and close enough that they look painted on. On a calm morning at Redfish Lake just south of town, the peaks show up twice, once in the sky and once in the water. Stanley has the biggest cluster of campgrounds in the state, and it's often one of the coldest places in the country overnight, even in summer.
Beyond Stanley, Lowman sits on the Payette River with hot springs along the road, and Idaho City is an old gold-rush town with Forest Service cabins in the hills around it. In the east, Island Park has campgrounds along the Henry's Fork near Yellowstone. Up north, Elk City is about as remote as Idaho gets, so fill up before you go.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
588 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
