Montana lets you rent an old fire lookout for the night. Garver Mountain near Yaak and Webb Mountain above Lake Koocanusa near Rexford are two of them: a room on stilts with windows on every side and the whole valley below. Forest Service cabins near Sula, Neihart and Augusta work the same way. Book ahead, bring your own water, and expect a gravel road at the end.
For drive-in campgrounds, Red Lodge sits at the foot of the Beartooth Highway, and Augusta is where the plains run into the Rocky Mountain Front. Canyon Ferry near York has campgrounds along the reservoir outside Helena. High roads and campgrounds often stay snowed in until June.
