Valley of Fire, near Moapa Valley, is red sandstone that glows at sunset, and the campgrounds at Atlatl Rock and Arch Rock sit right among it. Atlatl Rock is named for the petroglyphs on its face, carved long before anyone drove out here.
When Las Vegas is baking, Mount Charleston is the escape, with Forest Service campgrounds in the pines an hour from the Strip and much cooler air. In the northeast, Angel Lake above Wells is a high alpine lake at the end of a steep road. Kingston, in the Toiyabe Range off Highway 50, has small campgrounds along the creek. Las Vegas, Reno and Pahrump have most of the RV parks.
