Camping in New Mexico

38 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.

The Gila Wilderness, above Gila Hot Springs, was the first designated wilderness in the world, set aside in 1924. A short trail climbs to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, rooms built into caves more than 700 years ago, and the campgrounds nearby sit by the river with hot springs within reach.

In the Manzano Mountains near Tajique, Fourth of July Campground is named for its bigtooth maples, which turn bright red in October. Mills Canyon Rim near Roy looks down into a hidden canyon on the Kiowa National Grassland. Red River is a mountain town on the Enchanted Circle, and McGaffey is in the Zuni Mountains near Gallup. Most of these sit above 7,000 feet, so nights are cold.

Check locally

A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
