Camping in New Jersey

35 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.

The Pine Barrens surprise people who think New Jersey is all turnpike. In Wharton State Forest, near Nesco and New Gretna, the rivers run the color of tea from the cedar swamps, and you can paddle the Mullica or the Batsto for a whole day without seeing a building. Campgrounds like Lower Forge, Hawkin Bridge and Bodine Field sit right on the water.

Down the shore, Seaville and the towns around Ocean City and Cape May have big campground resorts close to the beach. Sweetwater and Pomona, near Atlantic City, have RV parks if you want to be near the boardwalk. Summer weekends at the shore book up early.

Check locally

A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
