Camping by state
20 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
The Kalalau Trail on Kauai's Na Pali Coast runs eleven miles along cliffs that drop straight into the ocean, and at the end you camp on a beach at the foot of a valley with no road in. Hanakoa is the stop halfway. You need a state permit, and they sell out.
Most of Hawaii's listings are backcountry camps like that. Above Waimea, the campsites in Kokee sit in the cool forest along Waimea Canyon. On the Big Island, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has coastal camps like Halape and Apua Point, and Napau Crater on the slopes. On Maui, Waianapanapa has a black sand beach near Hana, and Haleakala has cabins in the crater.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
366 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
