Camping by state
432 places to stay, each with its nearest town and where our information comes from.
The best nights in Alaska might be in a Forest Service cabin in the Tongass. Woodstove, rain on the roof, a lake or a cove to yourself, and a floatplane or boat to get you there. Around Petersburg, Sitka and Wrangell there are dozens of them, and you reserve them ahead.
If you're on the road, the Kenai is the place. Cooper Landing sits on the bright turquoise Kenai River, Seward backs onto the fjords, and Whittier is a tunnel away on Prince William Sound. Near Paxson, the camps are for river trips rather than vehicles. Distances are long and services are thin, so fill up whenever you can.

Boondocking Score
Coming soon: nomads will rate how easy it is to find a free, tolerated place to sleep here. A score shows once at least five people have reported.
Strongest badge first, then by nearest town. The badge says where our information comes from. A badge is not permission to stay overnight.
493 places on the Road Wild map, from trailheads to laundromats.
A listing is a lead, not a promise. These are places we know about, not places we have confirmed you can sleep tonight. Rules, closures, seasons and fees change, and forest roads and passes close for snow. Check signs and local rules before you commit to a night somewhere, and tell us when something is wrong.
